Since the day I became a professional pastry chef, one of the centerpieces of my kitchen has always been my KitchenAid stand mixer. It’s a workhorse that makes my work easier and I’ve had mine for over a decade. That said, these mixers cost a pretty penny under normal circumstances, and waiting until Amazon Prime Day is a good strategy to get a discounted KitchenAid. However, as the person scouring kitchen deals for your this week, Amazon ain’t it. The best KitchenAid stand mixer deal happening right now is coming from Walmart .

Right now, the KitchenAid 5.5-quart stand mixer with the bowl-lift design is on sale for $279.00, down from the regular retail price of $449.99. That’s over $170 staying put in your pocket. This isn’t to say that Amazon isn’t selling any KitchenAid stand mixers at a discount, they are. But the only comparable one to the 5.5-quart from Walmart is this 5-quart KitchenAid with the tilt-head , not the bowl-lift. (There’s also the 7-quart but then we’re in a different price range altogether.)

Why am I so obsessed with the bowl-lift? The bowl-lift handle is actually not about the handle, it’s about the engine in the head of the mixer. While the tilt-head stand mixer is fine for light use—maybe the average cookie bake once a month—the stationary head of the bowl-lift variety makes it much more suited to heavy-duty mixing, like big batches of thick cookie dough or kneading bread dough. It also means that it’ll last you longer. 

Remember how I just said I’ve had mine for over a decade? It’s almost been 15 years and I’ve challenged my KitchenAid. I make bread in it weekly, and it’s still going strong. I’ve also seen multiple tilt-head stand mixers break at the hinge when working in professional kitchens. It’s really sad actually: It always reminded me of Johnny Number 5 . 

For the best bargain right now, the 5.5-quart is the way to go. It’s a decent bowl capacity, it has the strongest design, and at $279 you’d be getting it for the possibly the lowest price I’ve seen of any Kitchen aid mixer, bowl-lift or otherwise.

Looking for something else? Retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot have Prime Day competition sales that are especially useful if you don’t have Amazon Prime.

• Home Depot extended its 4th of July sale through at least July 9, competing with some amazing deals of its own . It’s an especially good option if you’re looking for power tools, appliances, or outdoor equipment.
