PCMag calls the M4-powered iPad Air an excellent tablet with powerful performance and future-proof connectivity, and in daily use that mostly comes down to how much you can do at once without the machine complaining—its 12.9-inch screen leaves enough room to keep Safari open beside Notes during a lecture or to mark up a PDF with the Apple Pencil Pro without pinching and zooming your way through it, and with an M4 chip and 12GB of memory behind it, cutting together a short video or juggling a dozen tabs and a couple of apps doesn’t slow things down.
The bigger story with this generation is connectivity, since Apple’s N1 chip finally brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to the Air, and cellular models carry the C1X modem from the iPhone Air, which Apple says draws 30% less power. That last piece is really what you’re paying extra for here, because it means answering emails on a train or finishing a draft at a park bench over 5G without fishing your phone out to tether.
That said, the display runs at 60Hz, so scrolling and Pencil strokes won’t feel as fluid as they do on an iPad Pro with ProMotion, and the Air has no water resistance rating, which is worth noting if you plan to use it outdoors, near a kitchen counter, or by a pool.
