When Lifehacker Food Editor Allie Reinmann wrote about her favorite budget-friendly Dutch ovens earlier this year, she famously said, “You don’t need a Le Creuset … If you have one, that’s awesome; they are very pretty. However, if cooking is what you’re interested in and you don’t have $500 lying around, then there are many other quality, long-wearing, beautiful options out there.” And then she told us about Lodge .
I actually do have a Le Creuset Dutch oven, and it’s beautiful (and I’m terrified of ruining in). But at 5-1/2 quarts, while it’s great for soups and stews, it is too spacious for what I really need: a good sauce pot. I’m not about to start a collection of heirloom Dutch ovens that my teenage sons are unlikely to ever want, so I went the budget route on this one—I bought this 3-quart Lodge that I now use at least once or twice a week, and it’s on sale for Prime Day for $61.49. (That’s a couple bucks less than I spent, for what it’s worth.)
I took this picture of my first batch of sauce to proudly show Allie:

It does what you want it to do: It cooks food evenly, it cleans up with the swipe of a soapy sponge, and it looks nice on your stove if you need to leave it out to fully dry (or because you, like me, are tight on storage). A few months in, after many successful pasta sauces and other dishes, I offered to buy my mother-in-law the same one for Mother’s Day. So now I get pictures like this with messages that say things like, “I love my pot!”

Right now, the “Sandalwood” (that’s the one I have), the “Caribbean Blue,” and the “Island Spice Red” colors are all on sale for $61.49 .
