Apple’s iMac is still the king of the all-in-one desktop market, but there are a few other competitors. MSI just revealed its latest option: the “Modern” series of desktops with Intel’s latest Core processors.

MSI today announced two new all-in-one desktop computers, the Modern AM242TP 1M and Modern AM272P 1M series. Just like the iMac, it’s a desktop computer combined with a monitor in one sleek package—no desktop tower or mini PC off to the side. The AM242TP model has a 24-inch IPS screen, while the AM272P model has a 27-inch IPS screen. The resolution on both options is 1920×1080, which is serviceable, but less than half of the 4480×2520 resolution of the current 24-inch M3 iMac.

Both computers will be sold with Intel Core 3 100U, Core 5 120U, or Core 7 150U processors, up to 64GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics, Wi-Fi 6, and an integrated full HD webcam. You get two USB Type-C and two USB Type-A ports (both are USB 3.2 Gen 2), Ethernet LAN, HDMI input and output, and two additional USB 2.0 Type-A ports. The computers have room for both a 2.5-inch SATA drive and an NVMe drive, though it’s not clear how easy it is to upgrade the computer.

MSI added an “Instant Display” feature to both computers, allowing them to be used as an external HDMI monitor for another device without starting up the full PC operating system. You can also mount the entire computer on a VESA stand.

The computers look decent, but there are some limitations. For one, both models have mobile Intel processors instead of true desktop-class chips, likely to prevent thermal throttling. Apple had to use the same method for its older Intel-powered iMac and Mac Mini computers. There’s also no dedicated graphics card (or room for one), no USB 4, and no Thunderbolt support.

The new desktops are starting to show up at retailers: Adorama is selling the 24-inch Core 5 model already for $849. That’s not a bad price for an all-in-one desktop (the M3 iMac starts at $1,300), but it still has all the usual limitations of that form factor. You’re stuck with that 1080p monitor for the life of the computer.
